How the conversion works

The digital PSAT/NMSQT is built on the SAT's own scale. Sections run 160 to 760 instead of 200 to 800 only because the PSAT skips the hardest SAT content, so a PSAT score is a same-day SAT estimate by design, not by regression.

The projected range adds typical fall-to-spring growth on top of that baseline: a slice of your remaining headroom, so a 1000 sees a wider range than a 1400. The per-domain point estimates use the same heuristics as this site's Forecast: expected extra misses in a weak domain, times the value of a miss, capped per domain and overall. Every number is an estimate and is labeled like one.

The eight domains on your score report are the same eight this site tags every question with, which is why the autopsy converts directly into drills: a free account rates every answer and measures the leaks per skill instead of per report.

Questions

How accurate is a PSAT to SAT conversion?

The PSAT is scored on the same vertical scale as the SAT, so your PSAT total is already a same-day SAT estimate; a 1050 PSAT means roughly 1050 SAT ability today. The projection range on top of that reflects typical growth between the fall PSAT and a spring SAT, which is larger when you are further from the ceiling.

When do PSAT scores come out in 2026?

The PSAT/NMSQT testing window runs October 1 to 30, 2026. Scores are expected to release in three waves: October 22, November 5, and November 12, 2026, depending on when your school submits answer sheets.

Why is the PSAT out of 1520 instead of 1600?

Each PSAT section runs 160 to 760 instead of 200 to 800 because the PSAT does not test the very hardest SAT content. The scales line up everywhere they overlap, which is what makes direct conversion possible.

What is a good PSAT score?

Roughly 1210+ lands in the top 10 percent of test takers and 1370+ in the top 1 percent. National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs are set per state on the Selection Index and typically require a near-ceiling score.

Which skill areas should I fix first?

Your score report rates eight Knowledge and Skills domains: four in Reading & Writing and four in Math. Fix the domains rated lowest that carry the most questions first; the converter above does that ordering for you and estimates the points each one is worth.
